The Bardiya National Park, also known as Bardia, is a protected area located in Nepal’s Terai region, adjacent to the eastern bank of the Karnali River and bisected by the Babai River in the Bardiya District. Established in 1988 as the Royal Bardia National Park, it covers a vast area of 968 square kilometers (374 square miles) and is the largest and most untouched national park in the region. The park’s northern limits are defined by the crest of the Siwalik Hills, while the Geruwa River forms the western boundary, and the Babai River forms the southeast boundary. The Nepalgunj-Surkhet highway partly forms the southern boundary, but it significantly disrupts the protected area. The Bardiya National Park, together with the Banke National Park, represents the Tiger Conservation Unit (TCU) Bardia-Banke, which is a coherent protected area of 1,437 square kilometers (555 square miles) that covers alluvial grasslands and subtropical moist deciduous forests. The park is a haven for around 53 mammal species, including rhinoceroses, wild elephants, Bengal tigers, swamp deer, and Gangetic dolphins. Additionally, the area bordering the Karnali and Babai rivers is home to 23 species of reptiles and amphibians. Overall, it is the largest national park in Nepal and is situated in the Mid-Western Region of the country.
